Yet only after extensive reconstruction during the Ming and Qing (1644-1911), did the city emerge as an architectural masterpiece fit to serve as the capital of the Chinese empire. A north-south axis bisects the city with the Imperial Palace was known as Danei (The Great Within). In the Ming, it was renamed the Forbidden City (Zijincheng), and more recently it has come to be called the Palace Museum (Gugong Bowuyuan). Designed with thousands of halls and gates arranged symmetrically around a north-south axis, its dimensions and luxuriance are a fitting symbol of the power and greatness of traditional China.
The year 776 BC saw the first Olympia (known as Olympics today) games in Greece. The games were conducted in wooded valley of Olympia Elis, every four years. Temples were built in and around Olympia Elis dedicated to Greek God Zeus, most supreme among all Greek gods. Olympiad was more of a festival held every four years and the victors in the games would be placed with wreaths made of olive leaves, for this King Iphitos was told to plant an olive tree by Delphi the Oracle.
The year 708 BC, 24 years after the first Olympia began 24 stadia event began and pentathlon event was added later on, boxing, chariot race and other events followed them. The victors of these games marched around the groove to the accompaniment of music and songs wearing their well deserved olive wreaths on their head. Olympia saw uninterrupted continuance of the events every four years even during the wars with Persia.
A myth about the origin of the Olympic Games comes from the Tenth Olympian Ode of the poet Pindar. He tells the story of how Herakles, on his fifth labor, had to clean the stables of King Augeas of Elis. Herakles approached Augeas and promised to clean the stables for the price of one-tenth of the king's cattle. Augeas agreed, and Herakles rerouted the Kladeos and Alpheos rivers to flow through the stables. Augeas did not fulfill his promise, however, and after Herakles had finished his labors he returned to Elis and waged war on Augeas. Herakles sacked the city of Elis and instituted the Olympic Games in honor of his father, Zeus. It is said that Herakles taught men how to
wrestle and measured out the stadium, or the length of the footrace.
